Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen) German Civic Heraldry HERMSDORF State : Thüringen District (Kreis) : Saale-Holzland-Kreis Origin/meaning: The arms were granted on July 1, 1994. The cross in the arms symbolises the Hermsdorfer Kreuz, an important highway junction near the town. It also symbolises the historical trade routes through the municipality. The tree symbolises the Holzland (wood-land) region. The bear symbolises the oldest building in the town, the inn 'Zur schwarzen Bär' (the black bear), which historically was the centre of the town. The oldest arms of Hermsdorf were designed in 1956 and showed also the bear and the pine trees. The arms were not officially granted, but used until 1969. The arms from 1956 On October 7, 1969 the arms were replaced by the ones below. The arms show in the chief three lightning rods, symbolising the local industry.
