HAVELBERG
State : Sachsen-Anhalt
District (Kreis) : Stendal
Origin/meaning:
Havelberg was founded as a bridgehead across the Elbe in the early 10th century. A bishop was appointed in 948. In 983 the Slavs reconquered the area and only in 1136 the city again became German and in 1150 the cathedral was rebuilt by Margrave Albrecht of Brandenburg. In 1571 the semi-independent diocese became part of Brandenburg. The oldest seal of the city dates from the 13th century and shows the local cathedral with four towers, standing on a hill rising from the Havel river. Above the cathedral the eagle of Brandenburg was seen. The present arms date from 1627 and show the eagle above a city wall.
