GANGELT

State : Nordrhein-Westfalen
District (Kreis) : Heinsberg (until 1972 Selfkantkreis)
Additions : 1972 Birgden, Breberen-Schümm, Schierwaldenrath

Origin/meaning:
Gangelt was in the 13th century a possession of the Lords of Heinsberg. The oldest seal, which dates from the late 13th century, thus shows the double-tailed lion of the Lords of Heinsberg with a bend between its paws, probably to distinguish the seal from the seal of the city of Heinsberg.
In 1484 Gangelt and the rest of Heinsberg became a possession of the Dukes of Jülich. Although the arms basically did not change, the lion has ever since been coloured in the colours of the lion of Jülich. The additions in 1972 did not change the arms.

In the early 20th century the arms below were shown in the Kaffe Hag albums. These arms show only the lion of Heinsberg.

The arms as shown in the Kaffe Hag albums.

Literature : Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes; Kaffee Hag albums 1920s.
