Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen)
German Civic Heraldry

FRANZBURG

State : Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Disctrict (Kreis) : Nordvorpommern

Origin/meaning:
The arms are supposedly granted by Duke Bogislaw XIII of Pommerania in 1587, when he founded the city. The arms show a castle with the griffin of Pommerania in the gate. The new city was named after his father in law, Duke Franz of Braunschweig-Lüneburg. The two letters thus stand for Bogislaw and Franz.

Literature : Hupp, O. : Königreich Preussen, Wappen der Städte, Flecken und Dörfer. Reprint from 1896 and 1989, Kulturstiftung der deutschen Vertriebenen, Bonn, 1993.
