ELLWANGEN
State : Baden-Württemberg
District (Kreis) : Ostalbkreis (until 1973 Aalen)
Origin/meaning:
Ellwangenw as already mentioned as a city in 1200 and was the capital of a large territory owned by the local Abbey. From the 14th until the late 18th century the local seals show a mitre, symbol for the Abbey. From 1802, when the worldy possessions of the Abbey became part of Württemberg, the present arms have been used. The arms appear already in late medieval times as the proposed arms for Erlolf van Langres, the founder of the Abbey in 764.
