Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen) German Civic Heraldry ELLENBERG State : Rheinland-Pfalz District (Kreis) : Birkenfeld Origin/meaning: The arms were officially granted on July 22, 1965 The arms are a combination of the checquered field of the arms of the Counts of Sponheim, to which the area historically belonged, and in the base three wheat ears and a hammer. The wheat ears symbolise the agricultural character of the municipality, whereas the hammer symbolises the presense of iron in the soil. Literature : Heyen und Zimmer, 1966
