Deutsche Wappen (Gemeindewappen/Kreiswappen)
German Civic Heraldry

EBRACH

State : Bayern
District (Kreis) : Bamberg

Origin/meaning:
The arms were granted on September 12, 1886 by Prince Luitpold of Bayern. The lower part is derived from the word Bach (brook) and is thus canting. The upper part is also canting Eber means boar. The name is supposedly derived from Eberbach.
In Ebrach a Cistercian abbey was founded in 1127. It owned most of the area until 1803. The seals of the abbey already showed the boar with the crosier in its paws. The colours of the lower part are taken from the arms of the State of Würzburg, to which both the abbey and the village belonged.

Until 1938 the shield was divided, afterwards the brook was placed in the base of the shield.

Literature : Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes; Hupp, O: Kaffee Hag albums, 1920s
