DEMMIN
State : Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
District (Kreis) : Demmin
Origin/meaning:
Demmin was already mentioned as a city in the early 13th century. The oldest known seal of the city also dates from the early 13th century and shows only a fleur-de-lis. The second seal of the city, known since 1265, already shows the composition as on the present arms. The city gate symbolises the city itself. The small shield shows the arms of the Counts of Pommern, a red griffin and a crest with peacock feathers. In the 13th century the city was the seat of a line of the Counts of Pommern. The composition of the arms has not changed since, but the size and shape of the gate has changed often during the centuries.
