COSWIG
State : Sachsen-Anhalt ![]() The meaning of the arms is not quite clear. According to the Historie des Fürstentums Anhalt (Wittenberg, 1710), the figure should be Princess Cordula von Anhalt, who resided in the city in 1475. The composition, however, already appeared on the oldest seal of the city, dating from 1325. The small shield shows the arms of Brandenburg (eagle) and Sachsen (bars), the original arms of the Princes of Anhalt. The helmet is described as a symbol for protection. The stars are probably only decoration. The arms at present (granted in 1995) have a blue field, but in 1984 they were described with a red backgrounds, see below. ![]() ![]() Literature : Bensing et al; 1984; new image from http://home.t-online.de/home/coswig-anhalt/dat_8.htm; Kaffee Hag albums, 1930s. |
