AUERBACH IN DER OBERPFALZ

State : Bayern
District (Kreis) : Neustadt an der Waldnaab (until 1973 Eschenbach)

Origin/meaning:
The arms were granted in 1963 and are based on the two oldest seals of the city, known from the 15th century. In 1811 the arms were also used as shown above, in 1819 new arms were adopted, showing a quartered shield with the first and fourth quarter showing in green a wavy bar, and the other two quarters were again quartered from silver and blue. Later the old arms were used again, but not officially granted until 1963.
The ox is a canting element (Auerochse), the small shield shows the arms of the Pfalz (Palatine) to which the city historically belonged since 1400.
