ANKLAM
State : Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Origin/meaning: Anklam received city rights from the Dukes of Pommern in the early 13th century and was part of the Hanseatic League. The arms of Anklam show the griffin of Pommern on a wall symbolises the founding of the city. The griffin holds an 'arrow' of unknown origin, but may be taken from the arms of Stralsund, and has been used since the 14th century. The oldest seal of the city is known from 1284 and already shows the griffin and gate, but not the arrow. In the 19th and early 20th century the colours of the shield and the different elements has varied widely, as can be seen in the images below.
The arms of Anklam as shown on the seal of 1284, around 1900, again around 1900, in the Abadie albums (1930s), the Kaffee Hag albums and by Rühl (1939)Literature : Bensing, et al; 1985; Schütt, 2002
