VIROVITICA AND PODRAVINA COUNTY
Origin/meaning:
The coat of arms is equal to the shield of the arms of the Virovitica County granted by Maria Theresia, and verified by the imperial and royal office in Vienna on 16th May 1746. The modern county, after briefly adopting a simplified arms (see below), returned to the original design.
The arms are based on the historical coat of arms of the Kingdom of Slavonia- a marten passant between two white bars - symbolising rivers Drava and Sava, adding an anchor for differentiation, as a symbol of hope and fidelity.
The county adopted in 1994 a coat of arms and a flag based on its historical coat of arms of 1746, but the newly adopted symbols were oversimplified, omitting the anchor and one river, and changing some colours. In 1996 the old arms were restored.
