SPLITCounty : Split and Dalmatia
Origin/meaning: Split does not use a proper coat of arms, but uses the above logo. The logo shows part of the northern walls of the Diocletian's palace, as it supposedly was seen in medieval times, and in the middle above the walls the belfry of the Cathedral. The two small shields show the Croat national arms as well as the local patron saint, St. Dujam. The oldest confirmation that Spilt used the rectangular coat of arms are dated to the early 14th century. Stone-cuttings are preserved from 14th and 15th century showing the same coat of arms with the shields around the belfry at any time showed the central rulers to which Split was paying alliance. In 19th and 20th century the coat of arms was sometimes shaped as classical heraldic shield, as a rule without the shields around the belfry. After World War II the coat of arms was no longer used, until in 1969 the historical arms were used again, with a star instead of St. Dujam.
