OSIJEK AND BARANYA COUNTY
Origin/meaning:
The coat of arms is based on the arms of the city of Osijek (bridge, late 17th century), County of Virovitica (anchor, 1746) and Hungarian county of Baranya (tower, 1694) and, of course, on the arms of the Kingdom of Slavonia, the running marten between two rivers under a star. In the middle of the coat of arms is combined bridge of Osijek and tower of Baranya, between two rivers, here Drava and Danube. In base there is the Slavonian marten, one of the oldest symbols used by Croats in these region in over thousand years. In chief there is a cross, symbol of faith, representing among others Djakovo city, center of diocese of Bosnia and latter of Djakovo-Srijem; an anchor, historically taken from the coat of arms of Virovitica county, symbol of loyalty, fidelity and hope; and the sixpointed star of Mars, part of the coat of arms of Slavonia since at least 1496, symbol of defense.
