DJURDJEVAC

Origin/meaning:
In the new administrative division of Croatia Djurdjevac gained the status of a city only in 1997, when, on the celebral session of the Council in February 1997 the new coat of arms adopted in March previous year, were presented.

A golden peacock on a cannonball reminds to the legend, according to which the city was saved from Turkish siege by firing peacocks instead of cannonballs. The stars are taken from the Ernust family arms. Sigismund Ernust, ban (viceroy) of Dalmatia, Croatia and Slavonia since 1494 rebuild the fortress of Djurdjevac to its present shape.
