SANTIAGO

Origin/meaning :
On 1552 the Spanish king Carlos V designates Santiago as a very honourable and loyal city, also becoming the first Chilean city to receive a coat of arms. The arms show a lion (probably derived from the Royal arms) with a sword in his hand on a silver background and surrounded by eight golden shell shapes on a blue background. The shells are the symbol of the pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela and also of the knights of the order of St. James (Santiago), the patron saint of the city. The meaning of the sword is not known.

The arms are presently used by the city of Santiago, the city's central district and is also used by other institutions.

Literature : Picture made by Enrique Augusto Noria Freyre, Peru; background from Hebert Castro Salinas, Chile
