Civic Heraldry of Chile

National Coat of arms of CHILE

Origin/meaning:
The arms were approved by the Congress in 1834. It is formed by a field divided in two equal parts: the superior in blue and the inferior in red. Two animals maintain the shield: a Condor, the hardest and corpulent bird that populates Chilean airs and the Huemul, the rarest and singular quadruped of Chilean territory. Both animals have in the head a naval crown of gold, which symbolizes Chilean marine glory. A plume of three feathers, red, white and blue, crowns the shield. This plume was the distinction symbol that the Presidents of the Republic used in the hat.
The motto translates as 'For the reason or the force'".
