CAUQUENES
Origin/meaning :
The arms were designed in the 1960s.
The two fishes on the shield are canting Cauques. An approximately 30 cm long fish that
was very common in the local rivers, and lead to the name of the city, due to the fact the
one of the rivers around the city is called Cauquenes River. Cauques are currently
almost extinct due to overfishing. The year 1742 inside a crown is the date of the foundation of Cauquenes by the Spanish governor Jose Manso de Velazco, under the authority of the King of Spain.
The pine trees and the bunch of grapes relates to the main agricultural products of the countryside around the city: pines for timber and paper, and grapes for wine. There is a tradition of wine making that dates
back to the colonial times. The two streams of water corresponds to the two rivers around the city, running from the coastal ridge into the central valley of Chile: the Cauquenes and the Tutuven rivers.
