Canadian Civic Heraldry

OTTAWA REGION

Province : Ontario

Origin/meaning :
The white wavy Y-shaped device, or Shakefork represents the Ottawa and Rideau Rivers, which have played an important part in the early settlement and economic development of the area, and are the prominent geographic features of the Ottawa-Carleton region.

The red maple leaf is symbolic of the national capital area and the people of Canada.

The Royal or Tudor Crown represents Queen Victoria's choice of Ottawa as Canada's capital in 1857. To use the Royal Crown as part of the Region's crest, it was necessary to receive official approval from H.R.H. Queen Elizabeth II.

The Mural Crown which appears above the shield is nowadays regarded officially as the symbol of municipal authority.

The English translation of the motto, "Cum Progressu Euntes" is "Moving with Progress".
