GREENSTONE

Province : Ontario

Coat of arms of Greenstone

Origin/meaning :
The arms were officially granted on September 15, 2005.

The green stripe indicates the geological features known as the Greenstone Belt, and it also resembles the geographical shape of the municipality. The gold stripe on it recalls the gold found within the landscape, the foundation of the area's early economy. The white indicates the snow that covers the region for much of the year.

The moose in the crest is a local animal known for its strength and resilience. The miner's pick indicates the original importance of mining in the region's economy.

The wolves are local animals already in use as identifying symbols of the area. The green discs allude to the name Greenstone, and the symbols on them indicate the past importance of the railways and the present importance of sport and commercial fishing in the area. The compartment refers to the Canadian Shield, the local forestry industry and the many lakes in the municipality.
