Origin/meaning : The arms were granted on March 5, 1954. The large arms show a crowned shield and are placed on a mantle. The arms are identical to the arms of Filip, Marquise of Bergen op Zoom. The village of Zemst belonged to Bergen op Zoom (now in the Netherlands) and the local council of Zemst and Weerde used the arms of the marquise on its seal in the 17th and 18th centuries. Compare also : Boutersem, Weerde in Belgium, and Rucphen, Fijnaart en Heijningen in the Netherlands Literature : Servais, 1955 |
