TURNHOUT
Province : Antwerpen
![]()
Origin/meaning : The oldest seal of the city of Turnhout dates from 1259 and already shows a deer running away from a dog. The deer was wearing a collar with the small shield of the Lords of Berthout. They were known as Lords of Turnhout from the early 12th century until 1347. The deer and dog may symbolise the fact that the area was used by the Dukes of Brabant as a hunting area. On the 17th century seal of the city only the deer was shown, the dog was removed. This composition was granted as arms in 1845. Literature : Anonymous : Van evers en heiligen - wapens en vlaggen van de gemeenten in de provincie Antwerpen. Antwerpen, 1998. |
