SPIERE
Province : West Vlaanderen
Incorporated into : 1976 Spiere-Helkijn
Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on December 17, 1971.
The arms are those of the Barons del Fosse et d'Espierres, taken from the seal of the council of Spiere in 1774. The estate of Spiere was split in the 16th century in Spiere-Vlaanderen and Spiere-Doornik. At the end of the 18th century Nicolaas Delfosse acquired the estate of Spiere-Doornik ('Nederhof') and in 1720 he received the title Baron del Fosse et d'Espierres. His son also acquired Spiere-Vlaanderen ('Opperhof') and both estates were united again. The banners showed the arms of the family as well as the cross of the banner of Rogier van Mortagne, the oldest known Lords of Spiere in the 13th century.
