Origin/meaning : The lower part of the arms shows the column of Liège, with or without the town's initials, and in the chief the imperial eagle. Sint Truiden historically belonged to the principality of the Bishops of Liège, but, on the other hand, was also a free imperial city ruled by the Prince-Abbotts of the Sint Truiden Abbey. The latter were in name only independent under the Holy Roman Empire. In practice the city and surrounding territory was part of the State of Liège. The old arms show the town's initials, probably to distinguish the arms from those of Liège.
