SAINT GHISLAIN

Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on August 29, 1840. The complete arms show a shield crowned with a mitre and an eagle and bear as supporters.

The arms are identical to the arms adopted by the Saint Ghislain Abbey in 1588. The Abbey played a major role in the local history for many centuries. The arms are a combination of the German Imperial Eagle and the French Royal fleur-de-lis.
