PUURS
Province : Antwerpen
![]()
Origin/meaning : Puurs never had arms before 1984, but used a seal , which only shoed the present supporters, but no shield. The new arms show in the first and fourth quarter the arms of the Cirstercian Order. The villages of Puurs and Breendonk were obtained in 1278 by the St. Bernard Abbey of Hemiksem. The Abbey owned the villages until the end of the 18th century. The chequered bar is taken from the arms of the Abbey and the Order. The second quarter shows the arms of the Croy family. It represents the villages of Malderen, Liezele and Lippelo, who were a possession of a branch of the Croy family for several centuries. The rooster in the third quarter is taken from the arms of Ruisbroek. The supporters, which were not properly described on the old seal are St. Peter, patron saint of the Puurs parish and a abbott representing the Abbey. Literature : Anonymous : Van evers en heiligen - wapens en vlaggen van de gemeenten in de provincie Antwerpen. Antwerpen, 1998. Viane-Wouters and Warlop, 2002. |
