MALMÉDY
Province : Liège
Origin/meaning : The arms show the symbols of the local patron saint of the city since the 9th century, St. Quirinus. Quirinus was a martyr and in 875 his relics were transfered to the abbey in Malmédy. According to legend he killed a dragon, hence the dragon on the arms. The mitre, sword and crosier are the symbols of the Malmédy Abbey in which his relics are kept. Literature : Anon. 2002 |
