Origin/meaning :

The arms were granted on January 30, 1840. The complete arms show a helmet with as a crest two leaves with the letters SPQH.

The arms combine in the right half the bars of the County Loon with in the left half two canting hazel (Hazelaar) trees.
Hasselt was one of the most important cities in the County Loon in the 12th-14th century. In 1232 Hasselt received city rights from Arnoud IV, Count of Loon. The city rights were later augmented in the 14th and 16th century. The two elements, Loon and hazel trees, already appear on the 15th century seal of the city. Later seals and images all combine the two elements, but the present combination in a divided shield did not appear before 1625. Ever since this combination has been the arms of the city.
