Origin/meaning :
![]() The arms were granted by royal decree on June 27, 1846. The arms are likely derived from the arms of the Halewijn family, who used the same arms. The shield with the three lions was used by the 17th century Lords of Beersel, of the Van Wittem family. They used a quartered shield with in the first and fourth quarter the arms of Brabant (a golden lion in black) and in the second and third quarter the arms of Van Wittem (see Wittem). As an escutcheon the Halewijn arms were used, as the Van Wittems were related to the Halewijn family through marriage. Literature : Servais, M. : Armorial des provinces et des communes de Belgique.
