ASSENEDE
Province : Oost Vlaanderen
Additions : 1976 Bassevelde, Boekhoute, Oosteeklo
Origin/meaning :
The coat of arms of Assenede is identical to the old coat of arms of the former "Ambacht" ("officium") of Assenede, a conglomarate of villages of which it was the capital. In medieval times the "Asseneder Ambacht" stretched from Kluizen (B) to Terneuzen (NL). Together with the "Ambachten" of Boekhoute (Assenede, B), Axel (NL) and Hulst (NL), it formed the so-called "Vier Ambachten" region.
The coat of arms combines the coat of arms of the county of Vlaanderen (a black lion on a golden field) and the Imperial eagle. This is because ecclesiastically Asseneder Ambacht belonged to the diocese of Utrecht (part of the German Empire at the time), while as the County of Vlaanderen was largely part of France.
The coat of arms of the Asseneder Ambacht is also incorporated in the coat of arms of Ertvelde and Zelzate.
