ALVERINGEM
Province : West Vlaanderen
![]()
Origin/meaning : The arms are identical to the previous arms of Alveringhem, but without the supporter, St. Audomare (St. Omer), the local patron saint (see image below). These arms were granted on July 29, 1963. The three spruce cones are taken from the arms of the Chapter of St. Omaars, which owned the village already in the 7th century and kept most of the rights until 1793. In 1604 part of the rights were sold to the castellany of Veurne. The arms of the castellany were the lion of Flanders with a green cross. In 1963 the cross was wrongly shown as blue, but in the new arms this was corrected. The arms of the castellany were granted by King Phlip II on May 21, 1561.
