Civic Heraldry of the Central African Republic

National arms of CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC

Origin/meaning:
The arms were adopted on May 17, 1963.
The arms show in a quartered shield an elephant, a tree, a star and a black hand. The escutcheon shows a circle with the map of Africa and a star. The shield is surrounded by two national flags, a sun an the Order of Merit of the country. The upper motto 'Zo kwe zo' means 'People to people', the lower motto 'Unité, Dignité, Travail', means 'Unity, dignity, labour'.

After the independence in 1958 the new state adopted as asrms a hield with the national flag. These arms remained in use until 1963. The arms have not changes since, not even during the era of the Central African Empire.
