The badge show the Personal Arms of Willebrord Snellius (1580-1626), professor of Mathematics at the University of Leiden. His work was of great importance to hydrographic cartography.
He also laid the foundations for a method to measure angles by means of trigonometry. The badge was approved 8 February 1952.
