Origin/meaning

Zgierz has got municipal rights since 1288. The first known use of a fortress with an open gate and three towers dates from 1534 and 1535. It appeared on a seal used by local authorities of Zgierz as the town symbol. Later a crowned eagle standing in the open gate was added, a seal with such elements was used in 1778.

The composition was made into proper arms in the 19th century. However, only after regaining the independence by Poland in 1918 was it possible to officially adopt arms for Zgierz. The arms were officially granted on October 3, 1936. After the World War II the eagle lost its crown, but the crown was restored by the town council resolution on 31st of January 1991.

The gate itself symbolises the city, the eagle is the Polish eagle.
