Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 5, 1954 and again on June 25, 1981.

The arms are identical to the arms of Filip, Marquise of Bergen op Zoom. The village of Zemst belonged to Bergen op Zoom (now in the Netherlands) and the local council used the arms of the marquise on its seal in the 17th and 18th centuries.

After the merger in 1977 the municipality continued the use of the older Zemst arms, which were identical to the arms of Weerde.
