Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1966.

Witzenhausen was a possession of the Counts of Thüringen, who granted the city rights in 1225. The oldest seal is known since 1247 and shows a city wall and three church towers. In the early 16th century the gate was added and a letter W was placed in the gate. Later seals and images, however, were still sometimes based on the oldest seal.
