Origin/meaning

The lion is the arms of the famikly Beninga zu Grimersum, who originally came from the Beninghaburch in Wirdum (first mentioned in 1354). The crosier symbolises a monastery which was founded in 1255 just south of Wirdum.

Literature: Leiner, K. : Panorama Norden. Norden, 1972.
