Origin/meaning

Wildeshausen became a city in the early 13^th century and the oldest seal dates from the same time. The seal shows already the same composition as the arms : the local church with the rose of the arms of Count Burghard of Oldenburg-Wildeshausen and St. Alexander, the patron saint of the city.
As both towers of the church were destroyed in 1214 and 1219, and the city became a possession of the city of Bremen in 1270, a new seal was used in the 14^th century. It showed a similar composition, a single tower with St. Alexander in the gate, and the key of Bremen above the tower.

In the early 20^th century the arms were devised and based on the oldest seal, as can be seen in the image below.
