Origin/meaning

The village was founded in 1766 by the Rhauderfehn Compagnie, a private company that cultivated the moors. In the early 19th century the settlement became a municipality. The present arms were granted in 1955 and are based on the logo of the company.

Besides the staff of Mercure and anchor, the logo showed a beehive, horn of plenty, tree, whear-ears, flowers and a ship. All these symbolised the work of the company; trade, sailing and (rich) agriculture. In the present arms the stick and anchor represent the trade and the sailing and shipbuilding.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
