Official blazon

(de) In Silber über blau-silbernen Wellen ein roter Leuchtturm mit goldener Laterne, von dem nach rechts und links drei rote, goldschimmernde Strahlenbündel ausgehen. Das Mauerwerk unterhalb der Laterne ist belegt mit einem geteilten Schild: oben Silber ohne Bild, unten Blau, darin ein silberner Hering.

Origin/meaning

Westerland received city rights in 1905 and the arms were granted on February 27, 1907.

The lighthouse is the symbol of the city, and also a symbol for the importance of shipping for the city. The waves symbolise the North Sea. The small shield shows the old 18^th century arms of the island of Sylt, on which the city is situated. The seal showed a divided shield with a blank upper half and a herring in the lower half. The herring, Sild, is a canting symbol for the island.
