The arms were granted in 1959.
The arms show the local castle which for many centuries was a possession of the Von Palant family, whose arms showed the gold and black bars.
The British Museum holds a seal of the local council from the 18th (?) century, showing different arms and the local patron saint, Severinus of Köln.
