Origin/meaning

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, which dates from the time of the granting of the city rights in 1383. The seal showed the local monastery of St. John, founded in 986. The seal was used for several centuries. In the 19th century the present arms were based on the seal, but the image of the church differs markedly from the original seal. In the late 19th century it was also stated that the building was the local city hall. The present colours are used since the middle of the 20th century.
