VYŽUONOS

County : Utena
Municipality : Utena

Arms (crest) of Vyžuonos
Official blazon
Lithuanian blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on December 29, 2005.

The arms were officially canting: "vyzas" refers to "grass-snake" in the local dialect. It also reflects the semi-legendary fact that Vyžuonos was the site of an ancient pagan sanctuary dedicated to grass-snakes, which is one of most sacred animals for Lithuanians. The head of an ancient idol of a grass-snake can be seen in the wall of Vyžuonos church.
