Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on February 18, 1955.

The arms already appear in the oldest known seal of the town, dating from around 1330. The arms were officially granted in 1955 and show the panther of the Lords of Kraiburg-Ortenburg, from the Spanheim dynasty. The panther is the symbol for the Spanheim families. The diamonds are the arms of Bayern, as the Wittelsbach family, Dukes of Bayern, succeeded the Lords of Kraiburg-Ortenburg as rulers over the city.

From around 1500 until 1955 the city used different arms, showing the arms of Bayern with a canting beaver (the name can be translated as: beaver borough on the Vils), either in the lower half or in a bend.
