Origin/meaning
The arms show in the upper half the lion of Hessen, and in the lower right half the wheel of the State of Mainz.
The lower left half shows a canting symbol, half the Gothic digit 8, making a '4' (Vier=four). The four already appears in the oldest seal, dating from the early 16th century, but accompanied by the lion of the Pfalz, as the town belonged to the Pfalz at the time, and the diamonds of the Wittelsbach family, Princes of the Pfalz. When the city became part of the State of Mainz, the upper half showed the wheel of Mainz, the lower the 4.
The present arms were granted on April 14, 1926 and the addition of the lion indicated that the city is now part of Hessen.
