Municipality : Varakļāni

Arms of Varakļāni (town)

Official blazon

Zelta laukā divi melni galvaspāļi, galvā ejoša zelta lapsa.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1938.

Varaklani is first mentioned in 1583, when the Borh family acquired it. In 1675 it was a borough, called Warkland in German. In 1784 it was a town, called Varklany in Russian.
But the development to the city was slow, and city rights were granted only in 1928.

The arms show a marten as a symbol of wealth, and three golden pales as symbols of three important trade ways, crossing in Varaklani.
