VALLFOGONA DE RIPOLLÈS

Region : Catalonia
Province : Girona

Escudo de Vallfogona de Ripollès

Official blazon

Escut caironat: d'or, una vall de sinople sobremuntada i carregada de 3 pinyes de l'un a l'altre. Per timbre, una corona de comte.

Origin/meaning

These arms have been officially granted on April 24, 1991.

The local castle belonged to the barony of Milany, called later barony of Vallfogona when the Milanys moved to the town; their successors, the Pinós family, received in 1600 the county of Vallfogona (the arms have the count's crown at the top). The arms show three pine cones, taken from the arms of Pinós, and the valley of Vallfogona (name that comes from Latin "valle fecunda", fecund valley).
