Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1925.

Valdemārpils, called then Sasmaka, is first mentioned in 1582 as a fishing village at the Sasmaka lake. In 1917 town rights were granted.

The arms were granted in 1925. The fishing ship symbolizes the origin of settlement, and cones symbolize large woods on environs.

In 1926 the name of town was changed to Valdemārpils. Krišjanis Valdemārs (1825-1891) was a leader of the "jaunlatvieši" movement ("Young Latvians") of national renascence. He went to school in Sasmaka.
