Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on November 24, 1997.

The arms show the helmet and crest (peacock feathers) of the Dukes of Pommern. The crest is identical to the crest of Pommern, but with the addition of two banners of the city itself. Usedom received city rights in the 13th century and was a possession of the Counts of Pommern until 1648. The oldest seal of the city dates from 1298 and shows a city with three towers and next to the towers the helmet and crest of Pommern. Later the helmet and crest were placed in the shield.

During the DDR time the crest was removed, and the colours were slightly changed; in gold a blue helmet with a blue and red feathers, see below.

In 1997 the old arms including the crest and banners were restored.
