Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 31, 1948.

The chief shows three crosses as symbols for the three former important monasteries in the district : Ebstorf, Oldenstadt and Medingen. The lower part shows the arms of the Counts of Lüneburg, who ruled most of the district since the 13th century.
